Best Coffee at the Moment

Normal folks may have one coffee they stick with but not me. I generally am ready for a new brand/roast/etc. every time I finish the one before. I might love a bag of beans and get it twice in a row but that’s about it before I move on. Don’t get me wrong, I have my all time favorites and I come back to ones I have had many times before but I generally have a best coffee of the moment. Being that I usually have at least two or three types on hand I decided to pick my favorite at the moment and ask everyone else what theirs is. Let everyone know through the comments what your favorite at the moment is or your view on the idea. Right now I would have to say that I am back to an old favorite. I remember one of my first bags of beans was this very one, Eight O’Clock Coffee regular roast. I have had many bags of this one and it still has a place at my place anytime. And for now it is my “Best Coffee at the Moment!”

What’s In The Work Pot?

A lot of regular folks drink a lot of regular coffee, myself included, but that doesn’t mean it’s all the same. Tell us what you drink at work or at the office and what you think of it. Just because it’s generally free or just a few quarters a month doesn’t mean you should not be looking for the best pot of joe. Maybe your comments can help others get a better brew!

Polls Open For Summer!

We have started our summer edition of “Auburn’s favorite Coffee Shop” poll! The poll is on the left of our site. Please vote now and let everyone know to come and vote on their favorites!
We have taken more steps to prevent any unfairness in this poll from our last one because at the end of the summer semester we will name “Auburn’s Favorite Coffee Shop as voted by AuburnCoffee.com visitors” for Summer 08. We will name a new winner every semester.

If you have trouble voting please let us know! However, if you come to Auburn Coffee and cannot vote on our poll there could be several reasons. The first reason is a little technical but basically it could be your computer cannot read something called javascripts. This is probably not the case however. In most cases, including the case that you are in a coffee shop reading this now, it is because we are taking several measures to ensure the validity of our poll. We are actively attempting to combat against multiple votes per person, etc. If you are at a coffee shop now try again at home. You’ll probably be able to vote there. However, if you really are concerned that you cannot vote for some other reason please contact us via our contact page and we will work to resolve this issue for you.

Thanks for visiting Auburn Coffee and thanks for voting!

Blade or Burr?

What’s the difference between the two kinds of coffee grinder?

blade-grinder.jpgGrinding your own coffee beans is a fairly easy way to ensure freshness in your cup of coffee. Grinders can be inexpensive, and some coffee makers or espresso machines even have them built in. There are basically two different kinds of grinders: blade or burr.

Blade Grinders
Most inexpensive grinders use a metal blade to chop up the beans. The blade cuts up the beans, and you control the fineness by how long you let the grinder run. Unfortunately, the resulting coffee grounds can be uneven in size, leading to inconsistant brew quality. Another downfall, is that if you are grinding finely, and therefore leaving the beans in the grinder for a longer period of time, there can be significant heat created by the blades. This can give your final coffee a burned taste. These are fine grinders for basic use, but that’s about it.

Burr Grinders
Burr grinders crush the beans between a moving grinding wheel and a non-moving surface. The positioning on the burr is what regulates the ground size, which allows for a more consistant grind. In the burr category, there are two different types.

Wheel Burr – The less expensive of the two burr grinders. The wheel spins very fast, and these grinders can be noisy. The higher speed rotation make these grinders more messy as well.

Conical Burr – The best grinders you can get are conical burr grinders. The burr spins slower than the wheel model, which makes them quieter and less messy. You can use a conical burr grinder for oily or flavoured coffees and it’s not likely to clog, like the other kinds of grinders. These are the best type, but you will pay the price for them.

So, do you currently use a grinder? If so what kind?

Thanks for Voting

Thanks to everyone that voted in Auburn Coffee’s first ever “What’s your favorite coffee shop in town?” poll. We will run a new poll every semester in which there will actually be winners but in the spirit of unity we are claiming no winners in our first ever poll. We have gained alot from it though such as a greater understanding of the passion for coffee that those of you in Auburn and Opelika that have visited Auburn Coffee have.

Here is a quick explanation of how we intend to run future polls. First of all each semester we plan to have an “Auburn’s Favorite Coffee Shop” as voted on by Auburn Coffee visitors. We are doing a semester long poll instead of the standard “best of the year” because we understand that tides shift so much from semester to semester in our college town. We also want to encourage each coffee shop to participate knowing that there is a chance to win several times a year and just because one shop may win for a certain semester they can still fair better next time.

Red Door June Pictures – Opelika’s Next Coffee Shop

Here are several pictures I took today of Red Door June. It is obviously a work in progress. Some of the shot are just to show its relation to other Opelika Landmarks like the courthouse.
